Hair oiling is an integral part of my hair care routine and even my self-care routine. I can never resist a good scalp massage, so I go through hair oils pretty quickly. However, that means I get to experiment and try different types to see which ones provide the best results for my concerns. There are plenty of hair oils on the market, whether they offer a luxurious, sensorial experience or help with specific concerns like dryness or itchiness.

Although I love both and often mix them to get all the benefits, I’ve noticed that my scalp has been out of wack. It’s been feeling extra itchy, flakey, and just overall irritated. I’m a huge fan and consistent user of Briogeo’s Scalp Revival line, especially when my scalp behaves like this, so when the brand came out with its new Rosemary Pre-Wash Oil ($32), I jumped at the chance to try it out.

About the Briogeo Scalp Revival Rosemary Pre-Wash Oil

  • It is formulated with rosemary oil — which is supposed to help with follicle activity, scalp circulation, and antioxidant protection — as well as tea tree oil and bisabolol, which help to reduce flakiness and soothe itchiness.
  • It also contains a blend of moisturizing oils like castor, grape seed, coconut, avocado, and olive, along with vitamin E, glycerin, ceramides, and biotin.
  • It’s best for all hair textures and types, from straight to coily and fine to thick, especially those dealing with dryness or a dry and flaky scalp.

What I Like About the Briogeo Scalp Revival Rosemary Pre-Wash Oil

When my scalp gets dry and itchy, it’s unbearable. But this pre-wash oil delivers the moisture and relief it craves. The formula contains a wide range of moisturizing and hydrating oils, and the ingredients are mostly naturally derived. Although it has tea tree oil in the formula, it does not tingle or create a sensation on your scalp so it’s safe for those with sensitive skin.

The texture of the oil is thicker than other pre-wash oils but it is elegant and feels lightweight on the scalp. A little goes a long way and because it’s primarily meant to relieve scalp issues, I like to concentrate on that area. It’s deeply moisturizing and helps reduce flakiness and dryness on multiple fronts whether it’s by helping regulate my oil production, adding moisture back into my scalp, or helping with exfoliating and stimulating the scalp. I’ve used it for a little over a month now and although I can’t tell if it helps with new growth, I’ve seen a significant improvement in my overall scalp health and balance, which is always a good sign.

Unlike other pre-wash oils on the market, I appreciate the convenience of the packaging and bottle. The squeeze bottle helps me get every last drop of the product and the built-in applicator lets me evenly distribute the formula all over my scalp. Plus, it’s completely mess-free and doesn’t stain my pillowcase if I sleep in it overnight.

How to Use the Briogeo Scalp Revival Rosemary Pre-Wash Oil

You should use this pre-wash oil on a dry scalp before you want to wash your hair, whether it’s 10 or 15 minutes before or a day before. The brand suggests shaking the bottle first to ensure the ingredients are mixed. To ensure even distribution, I like to part my hair into sections, apply the oil solution directly onto my scalp using the bottle applicator, and massage it thoroughly, focusing on my scalp.

I spend around 30 minutes massaging it into my scalp because it feels good and becomes a moment of zen, but if you’re in a pinch, you can do it in a shorter amount of time. I bring the excess down to the rest of my strands to help condition the ends. I like to keep the formula in my hair overnight since giving myself the head massage is my nightcap, but I found that having the hair oil in your hair for at least 10 minutes before washing also produces the same result.

What to Consider Before Trying the Briogeo Scalp Revival Rosemary Pre-Wash Oil

Although the bottle looks a bit small, you only need a little bit to make an impact. It’s best not to oversaturate your hair with this oil, especially if you have a finer hair texture. This oil is a little bit thicker in texture compared to the other pre-wash oils on the market due to the amount of castor oil in the formula, but it does wash off completely in the shower. This oil does not have a scent so you may want to opt for another brand if fragrance adds to the aromatherapy experience or hair oiling ritual for you.
