Looks like a good idea until you need to let out more string.
The contraption really looks good but my time is worth way much more than killing it trying to build this. With my luck it would be messed up and not ever work correctly.
Why not simply get rid of the turf areas with ground cover?

I once cut grass on my private football pitch with a butter knife. It was so perfectly cut you could mistake it for a bowling green. In fact someone did and started playing bowls on it. I had to physically remove them.
