Latest: Video: ‘Barbie’ | Anatomy of a Scene

“My name is Greta Gerwig, and I am the co-writer and director of ‘Barbie.’” “(SINGING) I’m just Ken. Anywhere else, I’d be a ten.” “The thing that I can say most about this sequence is that this was the thing that I most knew what I wanted it to be, and no one else knew what I wanted it to be. Every time I look at this, it’s just the ridiculousness of how we did it, which is they’re obviously arriving on these pedalos on a beach that has no water. It’s a solid mass with these waves that are sculptures. And I had everyone in this scene pretend to be moving in slow motion except for Ryan, who’s singing. And I think I got four takes into it, and I thought, this just — is this so ridiculous that I’m doing pretend slow motion? But then I thought, I think I just have to commit. Now I’ve done it....

Latest: Two African Migrants’ Fantastical, Harrowing Odyssey in “Io Capitano”

At one point in “Io Capitano,” a deeply moving drama about an odyssey through unknown lands, the Italian director Matteo Garrone undermines his own realism, to startlingly lyrical effect. Seydou (Seydou Sarr), a sixteen-year-old from Senegal, is one of several African migrants who have been walking for hours across a great stretch of the Sahara Desert, bound, they hope, for Italy. Some distance behind him, an older woman (Beatrice Gnonko) collapses from exhaustion, wailing, “Aidez-moi! Aidez-moi!” (“Help me! Help me!”) Seydou runs back to help, offering the woman water from his canteen and urging her to keep walking. But his cousin, Moussa (Moustapha Fall), tells him to keep moving, and suggests there’s nothing more that Seydou can do. If they lose sight of their party up ahead, they’ll be...

Just In: Movie Review: Buckle up for a queer road trip caper in Ethan Coen’s spry ‘Drive-Away Dolls’

“Drive-Away Dolls” is, technically speaking, made up of old parts. Its script was written two decades ago, when references to Ralph Nader and Chelsea Clinton’s security detail were current. Its homages are even more vintage, with trippy transitions harkening back to the acid-soaked B-movies of the 1960s. There’s a mysterious, sought-after briefcase, odd couple thugs on the hunt for it and some innocents who find themselves unwittingly entangled in the drama. It is all very familiar, and yet, in the hands of Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke (who co-wrote), this 83-minute road trip caper feels like one of the freshest theatrical offerings of the year.Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan star as Jamie and Marian, best friends and total opposites who are looking to escape their surroundings fo...

Deadpool and Wolverine 4eva. Blake Lively shared a hilarious Instagram post recapping her trip to the 2024 Super Bowl with best friend Taylor Swift earlier this month — and she dropped some major behind-the-scenes tidbits about her outfit. Along with revealing that her Balenciaga x Adidas tracksuit pants actually had attached shoes, she gave fans a look at a sweet detail of her game-day ‘fit. “Last week I left my kids for the first time ever and wore pants that were shoes,” the “Gossip Girl” star, 36, captioned her post, adding, “I took pictures upside down and had no clue. I treated a friendship bracelet like a Flat Stanley for my husband like I didn’t realize it wasn’t ‘07.” Blake Lively added a sentimental touch to her piles of Tiffany & Co. jewelry at Super Bowl 2024. ...

Just In!! Andy Lau’s film The Movie Emperor pulled from China cinemas

Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau’s film The Movie Emperor has hit a road block in China. The satirical comedy, whose Chinese title translates to Mr Red Carpet, was pulled suddenly from cinemas there, a week after it was released on Feb 10, the first day of Chinese New Year. It is now showing in Singapore cinemas. The announcement was made by the film’s producer Huanxi Media Group (Shanghai) on social media on Feb 16, but no reason was given for the move. “Thank you for your support of the film since its release,” read the announcement on Weibo. “After careful consideration by our team, The Movie Emperor will be withdrawn from the Spring Festival schedule and be released on a new date.” Directed by Chinese film-maker Ning Hao, the movie sees Lau playing an A-list actor who yearns for the va...

Latest: Video: ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ | Anatomy of a Scene

I’m Martin Scorsese, and I was the director and co-writer and co-producer of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon.’ By this point in the story, it’s become pretty evident that the people who’ve been perpetrating the disappearances and murders of the Osage Native Americans in order to gain their headrights, their oil money, are being investigated. And they’ve narrowed it down to whom they thought the weakest link would be. The one they know they could probably get the information from or break is Ernest Burkhart. And he’s played by Leo DiCaprio. “Well, here we go.” Since the characters are all circling around each other in the movie, and since the circle gets tighter and tighter, my drawing for the shot was simply a circle with an arrow. That was it. “My wife’s real sick.” I want it to become a kind...
