Latest: Prince Harry wasn’t unfairly stripped of UK security detail after he moved to the US, a judge rules

LONDON -- LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry 's fight for publicly funded protection was rejected Wednesday by a London judge who said the U.K. government didn't act irrationally in deciding to strip him of security privileges after he quit his role working as a member of the royal family and moved to the U.S. Harry plans to appeal the ruling.High Court Judge Peter Lane said the February 2020 decision to provide security to the Duke of Sussex on an as-needed basis wasn't unlawful, irrational or unjustified.“Insofar as the case-by-case approach may otherwise have caused difficulties, they have not been shown to be such as to overcome the high hurdle so as to render the decision-making irrational,” Lane wrote in the 51-page ruling.A spokesperson for Harry said that he planned to appeal the ruling an...

Latest: Biden’s team signaling a more aggressive posture toward the press

NEW YORK -- Occupants of the White House have grumbled over news coverage practically since the place was built. Now it's Joe Biden's turn: With a reelection campaign underway, there are signs that those behind the president are starting to more aggressively and publicly challenge how he is portrayed.Within the past two weeks, an administration aide sent an unusual letter to the White House Correspondents' Association complaining about coverage of a special counsel's report on Biden's handling of classified documents. In addition, the president's campaign objected to its perception that negative stories about Biden's age got more attention than remarks by Donald Trump about the NATO alliance. It's not quite “enemy of the people” territory. But it is noticeable.“It is a strategy,” said Frank...

Latest: Amid artificial intelligence boom, AI girlfriends – and boyfriends – are making their mark

NEW YORK -- A few months ago, Derek Carrier started seeing someone and became infatuated. He experienced a “ton” of romantic feelings but he also knew it was an illusion. That's because his girlfriend was generated by artificial intelligence. Carrier wasn't looking to develop a relationship with something that wasn’t real, nor did he want to become the brunt of online jokes. But he did want a romantic partner he’d never had, in part because of a genetic disorder called Marfan syndrome that makes traditional dating tough for him. The 39-year-old from Belville, Michigan, became more curious about digital companions last fall and tested Paradot, an AI companion app that had recently come onto the market and advertised its products as being able to make users feel “cared, understood and loved.” ...

Latest: Ex-Detroit police chief James Craig drops Republican bid for open U.S. Senate seat in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. -- Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig is ending his Republican bid for an open U.S. Senate seat representing Michigan just over four months after launching his campaign, he told The Associated Press on Tuesday.Craig was seen as one of the more high-profile candidates to enter the race when he announced his campaign in October, and he had been angling to win the support of former President Donald Trump, who has often swung GOP primaries with his endorsement.“This is strictly a business decision," Craig told AP by phone. “I’m not leaving because I felt like I didn’t have the support. But from a business end, you need funds to run a campaign."Craig added that he is "strongly considering” running in Detroit’s mayoral election next year. In addition to leading the police dep...

Latest: They opened a Haitian food truck. Then they were told, ‘Go back to your own country,’ lawsuit says

PARKSLEY, Va. -- A married couple who fled Haiti for Virginia achieved their American dream when they opened a variety market on the Eastern Shore, selling hard-to-find spices, sodas and rice to the region's growing Haitian community. When they added a Haitian food truck, people drove from an hour away for freshly cooked oxtail, fried plantains and marinated pork. But Clemene Bastien and Theslet Benoir are now suing the town of Parksley, alleging that it forced their food truck to close. The couple also says a town councilman cut the mobile kitchen’s water line and screamed, “Go back to your own country!”“When we first opened, there were a lot of people" ordering food, Bastien said, speaking through an interpreter. “And the day after, there were a lot of people. And then ... they started ha...
