Just In!! New Releases on Netflix & Top 10 Movies & Series: Feb 23, 2024

Melancholia is back on Netflix this week – Picture: Magnolia Pictures

Happy Friday, and welcome to your weekly rundown of everything new that’s hit the service in the US over the past seven days. There have been a bunch of new titles this week, including 15 new movies and 11 new series headlined by Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series.

Quite a bit to look forward to on Netflix over the weekend. The next big live event, the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, kicks off tomorrow night on Netflix. We’ll also see season 9 of The Real World drop tomorrow alongside the Oscar-nominated A24 movie Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.

Next week, we’ll enter a new month, and you can find a rundown of the upcoming titles coming up in March 2024 here.

The top 10s below are based on points picked up by titles in the US daily TV and movie top 10. Numbers are provided to us by FlixPatrol.

Top 3 Must-Watch Picks on Netflix This Week

Melancholia (2011)

Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Drama, Sci-Fi
Director: Lars von Trier
Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland
Writer: Lars von Trier
Runtime: 135 min / 2h 15m

Quietly re-added to Netflix yesterday is Melancholia, a superb indie movie that was scooped up by Magnolia Pictures over ten years ago. Headlined by Kirsten Dunst, the movie “charts the disintegrating relationship between two sisters, just as Earth hurtles toward a collision with another planet.”

The movie has appeared on Netflix previously, with NewonNetflix.info reporting that it was last seen in early 2017, so for most, this will be the first time you see the film available.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (Season 1)

Number of episodes: 8
Rating: TV-14
Language: English
Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy
Cast: Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley
Writer: Albert Kim
Runtime: 64 mins / 1h 4m

It’s been years in the making, but Netflix’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon series dropped yesterday. Thawed from ice, we follow a young boy named Aang, who is the Avatar, meaning he can interact with four elements and must use those to stop an impending war.

Reviews for the series have been all over the place, to put it bluntly. Some love it, while others have been less kind. Our friends at ReadySteadyCut landed somewhere in the middle, concluding:

“It’s certainly flawed, but Netflix’s live-action take on Avatar: The Last Airbender is a valiant attempt to repackage one of the most beloved fantasy stories ever for a new audience.”

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)

Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy
Director: Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert
Cast: Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis
Writer: Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert
Runtime: 139 min / 2h 19m

While Netflix’s big movie today is Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa, we don’t know whether it’s any good because our movie reviewer was refused screeners. What we can recommend, however, is the multi-Oscar-winning movie Everything Everywhere All At Once that swept the Oscars and rightfully so.

The story revolves around a Chinese immigrant who gets swept up in an otherworldly adventure, and she is the key to saving the the multiverse by using the lives she could have led in other universes.

You can find every A24 movie currently on Netflix here, with two more scheduled for March 2024.
