Easily Backup and Migrate Your Zigbee Network!

A brand new function was added to Dwelling Assistant that makes backing up and migrating your Dwelling Assistant Zigbee community simpler than ever, each on ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT – on this video I’ll present you the way, utilizing the Dwelling Assistant SkyConnect!

  1. Does this work specifically in the case where, for example, my Sonoff Zigbee Dongle E breaks and I order the same model, allowing me to restore the entire Zigbee network directly from the Zigbee2MQTT backup? Thanks for the great video.

  2. Ah, used this video for a second time. Smooth ZHA migration from Zonoff Dongle-E to the SMLIGHT SLZB-06. Nice to have a coordinator I can put anywhere in the house since it is Serial over Ethernet.

  3. I moved to the ethernet based SLZB-06 following your guide and it worked a treat, but now im changing my router which has a different IP subnet, can I update just the connection to my SLZB-06 as it will have a new IP or do I need to do a full migrate again? Hope that makes sense

  4. Thanks for the great video. That is what I was looking for… but I have a problem. When I try to upload the manually backup. I always get the message that the coordinaor_backup.json is not valid. 😒 Was there a change in the system? I followed all steps of the video but at this point it does not work. I use z2mqtt. And I use my HA within proxmox. But I think that could not be the problem.

  5. Just got my SkyConnect (from YOU!) but don't have a free USB port to have both plugged in at the same time. If I use a hub, that won't work because the port changes when you remove the hub. So… I'm stumped for now. Great video and appreciate it!

  6. I watched this to get off of skyconnect. I keep having things drop off the network so I am trying a dedicated device that runs off of POE so that I can keep it farther from my server.

  7. I have a SkyConnect, and I think it works with Zigbee2MQTT now officially. I'd like to switch over, and it seems like it's a painless process to migration the other way around. Excited to try MQTT. I'm not sure about ZHA compatibility with light strips 'n such, so I'm going to look into Z2M. I also think Z2M is really neat. Confusing and complex, but it adds so many things to improve the network like allowing multiple coordinators and remote coordinators, so I'm starting to think it's the better option for me in the future.

  8. I use Z2M.. in your instructions you do the backup with Z2M and then upload it to ZHA? Does that mean I have to do a migration at the same time? I would actually really like to stay with Z2M, is there a way to restore the backup in Z2M?

  9. Got the backup transferred over and it's slowly getting there. Maybe I was ambitious in hoping that it would bring across the names of the devices! 😀 Going to take some time to find out what each sensor it again as they all have the same names!

  10. Hi, well done.

I appreciate the new migration tool from ZHA, but there is one point that gives me a headache!

It concerns the renaming of the IEEE address from the new coordinator during this migration process.

In order for the existing Zigbee network to function with the new coordinator, the IEEE address of the new coordinator must be renamed with the same address as the old coordinator… So far everything is ok and the Zigbee network seems working well.

What bothers me, is that from then on the 2 Zigbee coordinators have the same IEEE address and this represents a big problem if you want to use the old one in the same Home Assistant instance. A second coordinator must have a different IEEE address and I don't know of any way to change the IEEE address again.

This coordinator has actually become unusable for this installation!

  11. …but Zigbee2MQTT has such a bigger database of supported devices…won't migrating from Z2M to ZHA cause a lot of people to suffer immediate device compatibility problems? That is the reason I switched from ZHA to Z2M in the first place. Is ZHA a requirement for simultaneously transitioning/support matter devices and network?

  12. Hey Lewis, thanks so much for this. When I go to the ZHA integration, the "Download backup" setting is greyed out and I can't hit it. My CC2530 Zigbee stick stopped working recently and I want to migrate to a Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 dongle without having to set all the devices up again. Any ideas why that would be greyed out – would it be because the other Zigbee stick is dead? Or have they removed CC2530 from use? Any help would be greatly appreciated – I really don't want to set up 40 devices again.

  13. I just migrated to new radio, the home assistant didn't show me the last config screen. The HA blocked the new radio and I had to go to Repairs and allow change. Then it proceeded to finish the setup.

  14. Hi guys, when I hit the "Download Backup" in the Network Settings for my Conbee 2 stick it saves off a json file in my downloads folder on the laptop. If I open this in Notepad++ it is rather tiny, 47 lines and it doesn't mention any of my devices, 17 in total I think… Should they all be listed in this json file?

  15. I really enjoy your videos. Very informative and pleasent presentation. Thank you for that.
I was wondering if you could share with us if you still using Skyconnect and your experience with it?
I'm wondering since I'm using ConbeeII with deCONZ, but I received Skyconnect several months ago. (I also have a Sonoff Zigbee3.0 USB dongle plus, but never used it.) My initial thought was to switch to Skyconnect and get Matter, with z2mqtt, but I maybe better off with Skyconnet/zha.(?) I'm not an advanced user, would like to keep things "easy", but several of my friends are using z2mqtt and they are very happy with that.
