Breaking News: GOP’s Michael McCaul sees path to ‘yes’ on House aid for Ukraine

How can Ukraine’s supporters heal divides in the House Republican majority to win approval on $60 billion in fresh security assistance in time for Ukraine, which needs supplies, to stave off a freshly advancing Russian army?“At the end of the day I do think a majority in the House will pass this [Ukraine aid],” Rep. Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, told reporters at a Monitor Breakfast Friday. While some members “can’t be persuaded,” Mr. McCaul says proponents like himself will have to redouble efforts in the coming days “to make it palatable” enough to win over skeptics. At the breakfast, the Texas Republican also addressed other issues including what he calls a “false dichotomy’’ between defending the U.S. southern border or aiding Ukraine, the resurgenc...

Breaking News: Trump privately backs 16-week abortion ban with exceptions, report says

Donald Trump likes the idea of a national ban on abortion past 16 weeks of pregnancy with exceptions for rape, incest and to save the life of the mother, the New York Times reported on Friday morning.Trump has veered away from taking a firm stance on abortion during his presidential campaign. He has taken credit for the US supreme court’s 2022 overturning of Roe v Wade, since he appointed three of the justices who took part in that decision, but he has also suggested that Republicans who take extreme stances on abortion lose elections.“Know what I like about 16?” Trump told one individual, according to the Times, which based its report on two people with knowledge of Trump’s thoughts. “It’s even. It’s four months.”Trump is waiting until after the conclusion of the Republican primary to pub...

Breaking News: Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is dead, prison service says

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova hit back at the reflex assumption that Putin murdered Navalny. “The immediate reaction of NATO leaders to Navalny’s death in the form of direct accusations against Russia is self-exposing. There is still no forensic examination, yet Western conclusions are already prepared,” she said. Putin was informed about Navalny’s death, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, but the president was pointedly silent about the news — a hallmark trait. During a one-hour discussion with workers and students at a factory in Chelyabinsk on the Ural Mountains, which was broadcast live on Russian state media, he didn’t say a word about Navalny. Instead, he laughed and smiled as he discussed industry, robotics, trams, and tourism. Yulia Nav...

Breaking News: Jordan Klepper Puts Gun Problem in Terms NFL Fans Can Understand

More than 24 hours after gunfire erupted during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade on Wednesday—killing one person and injuring at least 22 others—we still know very little about exactly what led to the tragic events or who is responsible for them. “The good news is we do know one of the heroes that helped stopped the shooting,” said The Daily Show correspondent/this week’s guest host Jordan Klepper on Thursday.“It wasn’t a good guy with a gun,” Klepper continued. “It wasn’t anybody bearing arms. It was just a guy with arms.”That man, Chiefs fan Paul Contreras, was at the parade with his three daughters with the plan to celebrate with the rest of his city. But when the shooting began and Contreras found himself within spitting distance of the alleged gunman, he did what he could—and...
