The Perry Fine Arts Series will present “Beauty and the Beast” at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 1 in the Perry High School’s Performing Arts Center, 1200 18th St.
Area residents will have the chance to hear one of Iowa’s premier performing arts organizations when OPERA Iowa, Des Moines Metro Opera’s educational touring troupe, arrives on March 1. The performance is sponsored by the Perry Fine Arts. The concert is free. Donations are accepted. The Performing Arts Center is handicapped accessible.
OPERA Iowa will present “Beauty and the Beast,” sung in English. Enjoy a twist on the classic fairytale with the world premiere tour of Grétry and Borths’ Beauty and the Beast! The characters of Belle’s world are obsessed with how they are perceived by the world around them. The Prince was an example of this until the Spirit of the Rose cursed him so that his body would reflect his soul, and everyone would see him for the beast he truly was. With the help of Belle, the Spirit of the Rose, and a magic mirror, the Beast will try to change his heart and break the curse.
For more information about the concert, contact Cathy Clark, 515-681-6184 or cecat49@msn.com.
OPERA Iowa will also be performing Sid the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing. It is the story of a serpent in the circus who longs for more than just slithering in and out of his basket — he wants to sing! His efforts to find a singing style suitable to a snake are hilarious. The third graders will be treated to this opera on Friday. Be sure to ask your students about the opera.
The April Fine Arts Concert will be Carol Montag at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 24 at the Performing Arts Center.
