Game Tech: Colonizing Mars could be dangerous and ridiculously expensive. Elon Musk wants to do it anyway | CNN Business

Austin, TX CNN Business  —  NASA and its international partners named four astronauts to crew a SpaceX mission to the International Space Station in spring 2021 — beefing up staffing on board the orbiting laboratory. Musk, the company’s CEO and chief engineer, refers to his interplanetary ambitions more like a sci-fi protagonist with a moral calling than an entrepreneur with a disruptive business plan. “If there’s something terrible that happens on Earth, either made by humans or natural, we want to have, like, life insurance for life as a whole,” Musk said during a virtual Mars conference on Aug. 31. “Then, there’s the kind of excitement and adventure.” SpaceX’s plans for a Red-Plan...

Game Tech: Superloop’s NBN 1000 plan now matches Telstra for speed, making it an absolute no-brainer

We’ve long considered Superloop’s gigabit internet to be the best NBN 1000 plan you can get, but the provider now matches Telstra for speed, which makes it an absolute no-brainer for anyone wanting one of the fastest NBN plans.Superloop is now promising a typical evening speed of 700Mbps on its NBN 1000 plan, meaning it joins Telstra as the only two providers to do so. For as long as NBN 1000 plans have been available, Telstra has been the only telco to report typical evening speeds of 700Mbps, so Superloop reaching this number is quite impressive. What makes it a no-brainer though, is that Superloop’s NBN 1000 plan is significantly cheaper than Telstra’s, by as much as AU$71 a month. That’s because when you first sign up for Superloop’s NBN 1000 plan, you’ll pay AU$99 a month for your firs...

Game Tech: Nginx core developer quits project in security dispute, starts “freenginx” fork

Getty Images A core developer of Nginx, currently the world's most popular web server, has quit the project, stating that he no longer sees it as "a free and open source project… for the public good." His fork, freenginx, is "going to be run by developers, and not corporate entities," writes Maxim Dounin, and will be "free from arbitrary corporate actions." Dounin is one of the earliest and still most active coders on the open source Nginx project and one of the first employees of Nginx, Inc., a company created in 2011 to commercially support the steadily growing web server. Nginx is now used on roughly one-third of the world's web servers, ahead of Apache. A tricky history of creation and ownership Nginx Inc. was acquired by Seattle-based networking firm F5 ...

Game Tech: ExpressVPN disables split-tunneling on Windows due to DNS leaks

ExpressVPN has temporarily suspended use of its split-tunneling feature on its Windows app due to a bug that wasn’t properly directing DNS requests to its servers. The bug was initially discovered by CNET’s Attila Tomaschek, who contacted ExpressVPN after observing the issue on his Windows computer. ExpressVPN released a statement on its blog disclosing the problem and stating, “Although the issue is believed to involve less than 1% of users on a single app platform, Version 12 for Windows, ExpressVPN rolled out an update that disabled split tunneling on that platform entirely, to minimize the potential ongoing risk to customers. The feature will remain deactivated while engineers investigate and fix the problem.” Split-tunneling is a feature that allows users to pick and choose whic...

Game Tech: The Feds Just Bet Even Bigger on American-Made Heat Pumps

While everyone’s been focused on accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles to cut carbon emissions, a technological hero has been rapidly ascending under the radar: the heat pump. Instead of burning natural gas or coal to produce heat, this fully electric device extracts warmth from outdoor air—even when it’s freezing outside—and pumps it inside to warm a structure. After years of stealthy, steady growth, heat pumps are now outselling gas furnaces in the United States, whereas EVs accounted for just 8 percent of all US new vehicle sales in the first half of 2023.In November, the Biden administration announced it would be infusing the domestic heat pump industry with $169 million in federal funding, increasing capacity to manufacture the actual devices and their various components, lik...
