Breaking News: Japan slips to the world’s fourth-largest economy, behind the U.S., China and now Germany

TOKYO - Japan has slipped to the world’s fourth-largest economy as government data released Thursday showed it fell behind the size of Germany's in 2023. The numbers highlight how the Japanese economy has gradually lost its competitiveness and productivity while the population shrinks as Japanese people age and have fewer children, analysts say. Japan fell from the second-ranked economy behind the U.S. to the third-largest in 2010 as China's economy grew. The International Monetary Fund had forecast Japan’s fall to fourth. The comparisons among nations’ economies look at nominal GDP, which doesn’t reflect some different national conditions, and is in dollar terms. Japan’s nominal GDP totaled US$4.2 trillion last year, or about 591 trillion yen. German...

Breaking News: RIL in talks for stake in Tata Play, may buy Disney’s 29.8% share | Company News – Business Standard

Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries (RIL) is in discussions to acquire a 29.8 per cent stake in Tata Play from the Walt Disney Company, according to sources close to the development. This move is seen as part of RIL’s broader strategy to deepen its footprint in India’s television distribution sector. Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata group, currently holds a 50.2 per cent stake in the satellite television broadcaster. Besides Disney, the remaining shares are owned by Temasek, a Singapore-based fund. If the negotiations are successful, it would mark the first time the Tata group and the Ambanis have partnered in a joint venture. It would also extend the reach of JioCinema across the Tata Play platform. Disney had intended to divest its shares during Tata Pl...

Breaking News: This Arctic Circle Town Expected a Green Energy Boom. Then Came Bidenomics.

In Mo i Rana, a small Norwegian industrial town on the cusp of the Arctic Circle, a cavernous gray factory sits empty and unfinished in the snowy twilight — a monument to unfulfilled economic hope. The electric battery company Freyr was partway through constructing this hulking facility when the Biden administration’s sweeping climate bill passed in 2022. Perhaps the most significant climate legislation in history, the Inflation Reduction Act promised an estimated $369 billion in tax breaks and grants for clean energy technology over the next decade. Its incentives for battery production within the United States were so generous that they eventually helped prod Freyr to pause its Norway facility and focus on setting up shop in Georgia. The startup is still raising funds to build the factory ...

Breaking News: U.S. inflation up 0.3% in January, Fed still expected to cut interest rates this year | CBC News

U.S. consumer prices increased more than expected in January amid rises in the costs of shelter and health care, but it likely won't change expectations that the Federal Reserve will start cutting interest rates in the first half of 2024.The consumer price index (CPI) increased 0.3 per cent last month after gaining 0.2 per cent in December, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Tuesday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the CPI gaining 0.2 per cent on the month and rising 2.9 per cent year-on-year. The annual increase in consumer...

Breaking News: Student Housing Has a New Mantra: Bigger Is Better

When the Standard, an off-campus student housing complex, opened in the fall in Bloomington, Ind., welcoming its first batch of residents, it had a decidedly resort vibe. Along with the requisite pool and fitness centers, it enticed students with two pickleball courts, a dog park and a motion sports simulator. The complex even used a roommate-matching app.The arms race over amenities in student housing is nothing new, but what is striking about the Standard is its size: 1,000 beds, about twice the size of a typical dorm. In fact, the Standard could house 3 percent of Indiana University’s 34,000-plus undergraduates.Off-campus student housing complexes across the country are getting larger, some home to more than 1,500 students, and they are being built on prime parcels as close to campus as...
