Latest: Brian Belichick Staying With Patriots on Jerod Mayo’s Staff, per Report

There will be one member of the Belichick family sticking around Foxborough next season.

Brian Belichick, the youngest son of former head coach Bill Belichick, will remain on the New England Patriots coaching staff under Jerod Mayo, according to a report from ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

Brian Belichick has served as New England’s safeties coach for the past four seasons. It is unclear whether his role will change under Mayo’s direction. Next season will mark the ninth year that Belichick has worked for the Patriots. He started as a scouting assistant for the team in 2016 and has been an on-field assistant since ’17.

When Mayo took over as the franchise’s new head coach last month, he made it clear that Brian and Steve Belichick, would have roles on his staff if they wanted to remain in New England. However, Steve departed earlier this week to become the University of Washington’s defensive coordinator under new coach Jedd Fisch, a former Patriots assistant.

The retention of Brian Belichick on Mayo’s staff wasn’t the only major organizational move the team made this week. The Patriots also hired former NFL tailback Alonzo Highsmith as a senior personnel executive, per Reiss. Highsmith spent the past two seasons in a player personnel role at his alma mater, the University of Miami. He will work closely with director of scouting Eliot Wolf, director of personnel Matt Groh and others.

Bill Belichick and the Patriots parted ways Jan. 11 after his 24-season tenure as head coach. Mayo was announced as the new head coach on Jan. 12.
