How did Islam begin? Even Prophet Muhammad did not initially know that the entity appearing to him was an angel from Allah. It was through a test conducted by his wife Khadija—who was a polytheist at that time—that this was discovered. She conducted a test by exposing her body (removing her clothes) to see if the entity would remain. After this test, and following confirmation from Waraqah ibn Nawfal, the Christian astrologer/scholar, it was established that what Muhammad was speaking were the words of Allah, and thus the Quranic verses began to be revealed. At that moment, Jibril (AS) disappeared from there. Observing this, Khadija (RA) asked the Prophet (PBUH): "Do you still see that form?" The Prophet (PBUH) said: "No." Through this test, Khadija (RA) was relieved and asserted: "This is an angel, not a devil. If it were a devil, he would not have stayed when you removed your clothes and came close to me."
